Chess: 900 to 1800

Chigorin set-ups: …Nc6

Black blocks his c-pawn with …Nc6 and plays for piece activity: …Bf5, …Bg4, …Nb4 and the …e5 push. Watch c2: with your bishop gone from c1, …Nb4 together with a bishop on f5 can fork on c2. Keep it simple: trade a bishop on f5 with Bd3, meet …Bg4 with h3 once your knight is on f3, and take the e5 pawn when Black pushes it too early. Careful: before Nf3, an early …Bg4 just hangs to Qxg4 (see the Traps chapter).

  • 1…Nc6 2.Nf3 d5: London anyway (important)
