Ruy Lopez: the Exchange Variation
With 4.Bxc6 White gives us the bishop pair and doubled c-pawns. Our job: keep e5 solid with …f6, trade queens when it suits us (our king is then safe in the centre), and use the two bishops in an open position. Remember the trap 5.Nxe5? Qd4! — it is in the traps chapter.

Picking up where you left off.
Two lines, one of them core:
- Main line: 5.O-O f6 (core)
- 5.d4: early queen trade (important)
Learn takes up to five new lines at a time, core lines first. When the chapter is learned, practise it from memory.
