Chess: 900 to 1800

4.Nf3, 4.Bf4 and quiet e3 lines

Not every White player pins with Bg5. Against 4.Nf3 you play 4…Be7, which keeps all options open: after 5.Bg5 you are back in the Orthodox, after 5.Bf4 you hit back with …c5. Against the modern 4.Bf4 the same …c5 break comes at once, because no knight of yours is pinned. Against quiet e3 set-ups, take on c4 once White's bishop has moved and break with …c5.

Four lines, three of them core:

  • 4.Nf3 Be7 5.Bg5: back to the Orthodox (core)
  • 4.Bf4: …c5 and …Qa5 (core)
  • 4.Nf3 Be7 5.Bf4: the same plan (important)
  • 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3: the quiet line (core)

Learn takes up to five new lines at a time, core lines first. When the chapter is learned, practise it from memory.
