Chess: 900 to 1800

The Training Plan

The trainer's home screen: today's tasks (opening lines due for review, a daily puzzle set, the next lessons, a game) and the Road to 1800 plan, which ticks itself off as you make progress.

The plan has three stages. 900 to 1200, stop giving pieces away: the blunder check, free pieces and forks, mate in one and back-rank mates, the basic checkmates, the core London and Scandinavian lines, and opening principles.

1200 to 1500, win with tactics and hold the endgame: pins, skewers, and discoveries; removing the defender, deflection, and trapped pieces; king and pawn endings; the Lucena and Philidor rook endings; the important lines of every opening; pawn structures and good and bad pieces; and reviews of five of your own games.

1500 to 1800, play like a club expert: mating attacks, in-between moves and defensive puzzles, minor-piece endings and endgame principles, attack, defence and conversion, the full repertoire, and a puzzle rating of 1700.

A finished lesson, line, or puzzle each day keeps the trainer’s streak going.
