Chess: 900 to 1800

Hunting the bishop: …Nh5 and …Bd6

Black has two ways to get rid of your bishop: …Bd6 offers a trade, …Nh5 attacks it. The rules: …Bd6 → Bg3, and if Black takes, hxg3. …Nh5 with e7 empty → Bg5, hitting the queen. …Nh5 after h3 → Bh2. When Bd6 and …Nh5 come together, trade on d6 yourself. Otherwise let the knight take on g3 and recapture with the h-pawn.

Six lines, one of them core:

  • Early …Bd6: back to the main line (important)
  • …Bd6 and …Nh5: trade yourself (important)
  • …Nh5 with e7 empty: Bg5! (core)
  • …Nh5 with e7 at home: allow hxg3 (important)
  • King’s Indian …Nh5: this is why you played h3 (important)
  • King’s Indian 4…Nh5: the …g5 trick (deeper)

Learn takes up to five new lines at a time, core lines first. When the chapter is learned, practise it from memory.
