Main line: …d5, …Nf6 and …e6
The heart of the London. Black plays …d5, …Nf6, …e6 and usually …c5. You build the same set-up every game: bishop f4, pyramid c3–d4–e3, knights f3 and d2, bishop d3, castle — then the knight jumps to e5. Remember: …Bd6 is met by Bg3, and …Qb6 by Qb3 (next chapter).

Picking up where you left off.
Seven lines, four of them core:
- Classical set-up: …b6, Ne5 and f4 (core)
- …Bxg3: the h-file opens (core)
- …Qe7, preparing …e5 (important)
- …Be7: the bishop stays on f4 (important)
- …Nbd7 instead of …Nc6 (deeper)
- Early …cxd4: recapture with the e-pawn (core)
- …Nh5 at move 6: Bg5! (core)
Learn takes up to five new lines at a time, core lines first. When the chapter is learned, practise it from memory.
