Ruy Lopez: the Closed Spanish
Against 3.Bb5 we play 3…a6 and 4…Nf6, then the classical Closed Ruy: …Be7, …b5, …d6 and castle. Our main plan is Chigorin's: …Na5 to chase the b3-bishop, …c5 for queenside space and …Qc7 to hold e5. Learn the regroupings — the Ruy is a game of manoeuvres, not tricks. Against rarer fifth moves such as 5.Nc3 or 5.c3, use the same set-up: …b5, …Be7, …d6 and castle.
