Orthodox Defence: 4.Bg5 Nbd7
White pins your f6-knight with 4.Bg5. You answer 4…Nbd7, which sets the Elephant Trap (see Traps) and, after …Be7 and …O-O, reaches the classical Orthodox Defence. The plan to remember: castle, play …c6, take on c4 only after White's bishop has gone to d3, then …Nd5 trades two pairs of minor pieces and …e5 (or …c5) frees the c8-bishop.

- Capablanca line: 13.dxe5 (core)
- Capablanca line: 13.Bb3 and the isolated pawn (deeper)
- Capablanca line: 11.Ne4 avoids the trade (deeper)
- 7.Qc2: same manoeuvre, different finish (core)
- 7.Bd3: take at once and break with …c5 (important)
