Chess: 900 to 1800

White's 4th and 5th move alternatives

White does not always play 4.d4 and 5.Nf3. Most alternatives lead back to your normal set-up if you keep the order …Nf6, …c6, bishop out, …e6. Two things to watch: without a pawn on d4, your queen guards e5 and g5 along the fifth rank, and against d3 set-ups the bishop belongs on g4.

Seven lines, one of them core:

  • 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.d4: back to the main line (core)
  • 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.Bc4 c6 6.d3: pin with …Bg4 (deeper)
  • 4.d4 Nf6 5.Bc4 c6 6.Ne2 (important)
  • 4.d4 Nf6 5.Bd2: back to the main line (important)
  • 4.Bc4 Nf6 5.Nf3 c6 6.d4: transposition (important)
  • 4.b4!?: take the gambit pawn (deeper)
  • 4.Bb5+: block with …c6 (important)
