Traps and tricks
Two kinds of lines here. Traps you can set: the a5-queen guards the whole fifth rank, so white knights that land on d5, e5 or g5 without support simply drop off. Traps to avoid: discovered attacks with a bishop on d2, and the classic Tennison trick against f7. In each line, the move you play is the safe, correct one.

Picking up where you left off.
Six lines, three of them core:
- Set: Ng5?? meets the fifth-rank queen (core)
- Set: Ne5?? without a pawn on d4 (core)
- Set: Nd5?? when nothing guards d5 (core)
- Avoid: Bd2 and Nd5 before …e6 (important)
- Avoid: Nb5 with the bishop on d2 (important)
- Avoid: the Tennison trap on f7 (important)
Learn takes up to five new lines at a time, core lines first. When the chapter is learned, practise it from memory.
