How to spot it

A smothered mate is delivered by a knight against a king that is completely surrounded by its own pieces. The knight is the only piece whose check cannot be blocked, so if the king has no empty square around it, a single knight check is mate.

The classic picture: king on h8, rook on g8, pawns on g7 and h7, and a white knight landing on f7. Look for it whenever the enemy king sits in the corner behind unmoved pawns and one of its own pieces blocks the last square.

Philidor’s legacy creates that picture by force: knight checks drive the king between g8 and h8, then a queen sacrifice on g8 (Qg8+ Rxg8) makes the rook fill the last flight square, and Nf7 is mate. The queen must sit on the a2-g8 diagonal, and the knight must protect g8 from h6.

The same idea appears in opening traps: a knight on d6 or d3 against a king on its starting square, boxed in by its own queen, bishop and pawns.
