Commissioning, Change, Maintenance & Governance

Commissioning transfers a design into a controlled operating system. ISO 10218-2 explicitly includes integration, commissioning, operation, maintenance, decommissioning, and disposal in the application lifecycle 1.

Stage the evidence

  1. Design qualification: requirements, risk reduction, calculations, reviews.
  2. Installation qualification: identity, utilities, environment, wiring, networks, configuration, calibration.
  3. Operational qualification: functions, modes, alarms, safety validation, faults, recovery, backup/restore.
  4. Performance qualification: representative mix, duration, staffing, quality, throughput, changeover, maintainability.

Use a readiness gate before production: open hazards, high-severity discrepancies, missing energy-control procedures, untrained roles, untested backups, or incomplete acceptance evidence block release.

Ramp with learning

Begin at bounded rate and product scope. Hold daily reviews of safety observations, defects, stops, recovery, workload, and maintenance findings. Preserve first-out data. Do not improve a dashboard by hiding microstops or asking workers to absorb recovery silently.

Maintenance system

Create asset hierarchy, preventive tasks, condition indicators, spare criticality, calibration intervals, backup schedule, restoration drill, lubrication plan, wear limits, and escalation. Track mean time to detect and restore, not only mean time between failures.

Management of change

Screen product, recipe, speed, payload, tooling, fixture, guarding, code, network, vendor firmware, staffing, procedure, and layout changes. Determine which requirements, risk assessment, calculations, tests, training, and documents must be updated. Version control must connect deployed configuration to approval and evidence.

Governance and outcomes

Review safety, quality, throughput, cost, energy, job design, skill progression, operator autonomy, workarounds, and worker feedback. MIT’s task force argues that institutions and choices shape whether technology yields broadly shared opportunity 2.

Course deployment plan

Write a 90-day commissioning and ramp plan with evidence gates, training qualifications, data reviews, worker feedback, maintenance ownership, change control, and a rollback plan. Define success at day 7, 30, and 90 without reducing it to output alone.
